Birmingham’s Steel City Legacy Gala Makes History While Investing in the City’s Future

Birmingham celebrated more than style. It celebrated legacy.

In a night where couture met community impact, the Steel City Legacy Gala transformed the historic WorkPlay Theater into an unforgettable celebration of leadership, philanthropy, culture, and service, becoming Alabama’s first Met Gala-inspired experience while honoring the individuals helping shape the future of the Magic City.

Founded by entrepreneur and philanthropist Kyla Carr, the sold-out event welcomed civic leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, elected officials, artists, business owners, and community advocates for an evening dedicated to recognizing hometown heroes whose work has strengthened Birmingham for generations.

But beyond the glamour, the gala delivered something even more meaningful.

Throughout the evening, the Steel City Legacy Gala awarded more than $40,000 in academic scholarships and small business grants, reaffirming its commitment to investing in students, entrepreneurs, and future leaders throughout Birmingham and surrounding communities.

“Tonight was about honoring people who have poured into Birmingham for years without expecting recognition,” Carr shared. “Legacy isn’t measured by titles. It’s measured by lives changed. We wanted to give our community’s heroes their flowers while they’re here to receive them.”

Inspired by the creativity and elegance of the internationally renowned Met Gala, guests arrived in breathtaking couture, avant-garde fashion, and sophisticated formalwear, creating one of Alabama’s most visually stunning celebrations. Yet the evening’s greatest statement wasn’t made on the red carpet. It was made through the people being recognized.

More than 70 changemakers were honored across multiple categories celebrating leadership, entrepreneurship, education, fashion, media, business, public service, advocacy, and community engagement.

The evening’s Legacy Awards recognized visionary leaders whose decades of dedication continue to strengthen Birmingham and neighboring communities, while the Path Maker Awards celebrated innovators creating new opportunities and inspiring future generations through service and leadership.

Creatives and trendsetters were recognized through the Fashion Forward Awards, highlighting those whose influence continues to shape style, beauty, and culture, while the Influencer Impact Awards honored digital creators using their platforms to educate, inspire, entertain, and uplift communities both online and beyond.

One of the night’s most moving moments came during the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Awards, honoring an extraordinary group of leaders whose decades of excellence have left an indelible mark across business, entertainment, education, entrepreneurship, and community service. Among this year’s distinguished recipients were Urban Mystic, Dr. Cheyenne Bryant, Marcus “Him500” Barney, Mario Addison, Candace Holyfield Parker, and several other influential trailblazers whose work continues to inspire generations.

Throughout the evening, guests experienced heartfelt tributes, memorable award presentations, live entertainment, and powerful reminders that the strongest communities are built by people willing to serve beyond themselves.

What makes the Steel City Legacy Gala unique is that recognition is only part of its mission.

By combining celebration with tangible investments in education, entrepreneurship, and economic opportunity, the gala continues creating pathways for Birmingham’s next generation of leaders while honoring those who paved the way.

As plans begin for the 2027 Steel City Legacy Gala, organizers hope to expand scholarship opportunities, increase support for small businesses, and continue celebrating the individuals whose dedication makes Birmingham stronger every single day.

Because true legacy is not simply remembered.

It is built through service, shared through opportunity, and passed on to the next generation.
