Vanessa Estelle Williams to Lead Powerful Conversation on Black Maternal Health in Los Angeles

A critical conversation centered on health, equity, and community will take place in Los Angeles as the First Ladies Health Initiative presents its upcoming panel, “Born to Thrive,” in honor of Black Maternal Health Week.

Set for Saturday, April 11, at the historic First AME Church, the event will bring together voices across public health, advocacy, and faith-based leadership to address one of the most urgent issues impacting Black communities today — maternal health disparities.

Moderated by actress, producer, and director Vanessa Estelle Williams, the 90-minute panel will serve as both a call to awareness and a space for solutions.

More Than a Statistic — A Real Conversation

At its core, Born to Thrive is about shifting the narrative.

Black maternal health continues to be a pressing issue, with Black women and birthing individuals facing disproportionate risks during pregnancy and childbirth. But this panel moves beyond data — focusing on lived experiences, systemic barriers, and actionable change.

“This isn’t just about numbers,” shared Marquisé Alston-Allison, Executive Director of the First Ladies Health Initiative. “It’s about real people navigating real challenges — and creating pathways toward better outcomes.”

Bridging Faith, Community, and Health

Hosted inside one of Los Angeles’ most historic spiritual spaces, the event reflects a unique approach — merging clinical expertise with community trust.

Vanessa Estelle Williams emphasized the importance of this intersection, noting that maternal health is not just a medical conversation, but a social one rooted in everyday life.

By bringing these discussions into trusted spaces like churches, the initiative aims to meet communities where they are — with information, resources, and support.

Voices Leading the Change

The panel will feature a lineup of leaders and advocates committed to improving maternal health outcomes, including:

  • Dr. Shalonda “Sunshine” Crawford, licensed psychologist and First Lady of Experience Christian Ministries
  • Dr. Melissa R. Franklin, LA County Department of Public Health
  • Priya Batra, LA County Department of Public Health

Together, these voices will explore topics ranging from maternal mental health and reproductive care to policy, prevention, and access.

From Awareness to Action

More than a discussion, Born to Thrive is designed to equip attendees with real tools — from recognizing early warning signs to connecting with resources that support safer, healthier pregnancy journeys.

The initiative continues to push a powerful message: health equity should not be optional — it should be expected.

A Movement Toward Better Outcomes

As part of a broader national effort, the First Ladies Health Initiative is working to amplify research, education, and advocacy through culturally rooted spaces that foster trust and engagement.

Because when communities are informed, supported, and empowered — outcomes change.

And in this moment, that change is not just needed — it’s necessary.
