Westfield Culver City, in partnership with Malik Books, is set to host a significant Juneteenth Celebration: Honoring Freedom & Unity. The event, featuring award-winning actress and mental health advocate Taraji P. Henson, will take place on Saturday, June 22, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Westfield Culver City, located at 6000 Sepulveda Blvd.
In a statement, Amir-Reza Zad, General Manager of Westfield Culver City, expressed excitement about the collaboration. “We are so pleased to partner with Malik Books to host an inspiring Juneteenth celebration. We look forward to welcoming the local community at Westfield Culver City for a blend of entertainment and educational experiences suitable for all age groups.”
The celebration will commence at 1:00 pm with an enthralling performance by African Drummers. This will be followed by a panel discussion at 2:00 pm, organized in collaboration with The Sibley Firm. The panel, moderated by CNN Legal Analyst Areva Martin, will feature notable guests including Culver City Mayor Yasmine-Imani McMorrin and Mental Health Expert Wendell James.
During the event, the NAACP Customer Service Learning Center of Westfield Culver City will be on-site to facilitate voter registration. Additionally, the American Red Cross, represented by Ingrid Green, will provide information on the sickle cell initiative and promote an upcoming blood drive scheduled for July 30.
Attendees can look forward to a variety of engaging activities. LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics will offer a bath bomb-making workshop, and various children’s activities will be available throughout the day. Shake Shack will also be providing product samples at their location.
Malik & April Muhammad, owners of Malik Books, shared their enthusiasm about the event. “We are thrilled to host this incredible event that celebrates the rich history of Juneteenth while promoting unity within our community.”

The main attraction of the day will be a storytelling session by Taraji P. Henson at 3:00 PM, followed by an exclusive book signing and photo opportunity at 4:00 PM inside Malik Books. Henson will be presenting her debut picture book, “You Can Be a Good Friend (No Matter What!),” priced at $26.99. Tickets for the event are required and can be purchased here.
Taraji P. Henson emphasized the importance of her book, stating, “Mental health struggles can start even in childhood, often beginning with being bullied. This book isn’t just about bullying though—it’s about how children all have something different about them, and being different is what makes them so very special. ‘You Can Be a Good Friend (No Matter What!)’ is for the kids who feel different. This book is for parents who want their kids to accept differences. And this book is for the kids and families who’ve encountered hard times because of differences. I can’t wait to see the many conversations my book starts in homes and classrooms everywhere!”
Christopher Sibley, President of The Sibley Firm, also commented on the event’s significance. “This celebration represents more than just an occasion; it presents an opportunity for us to unite as a community and contemplate our collective history.”
