The administrator of NASA announced that a legendary individual passed away today. Katherine Johnson, one of the NASA mathematicians depicted in “Hidden Figures,” died Monday. Katherine lived to see 101 years.
Ms. Johnson was portrayed by Taraji P. Henson in the Oscar nominated 2016 film “Hidden Figures.” This movie depicted innovative and trailblazing African American women who worked at NASA during the Space Race and the many challenges they faced.
Katherin Johnson was best-known though for work that greatly contributed to the first American orbital spaceflight, piloted by John Glenn.
Mattel also created her into a barbie. The Barbie “Inspiring Women” Katherine Johnson doll honors “the achievements of a pioneer who broke through barriers of race and gender,” said Mattel. Mattel’s initial Barbie Inspiring Women line includes Amelia Earhart, Frida Kahlo and Katherine Johnson.
Fly High Katherine Johnson. You will be missed.
