A Celebration of Legacy and Excellence: The 2024 HBCU Honors at Howard University

Anticipation is reaching a fever pitch as the 2024 HBCU Honors, presented by Procter & Gamble, prepares to light up the historic Cramton Auditorium at Howard University on November 14, 2024. Now in its second year, this premier annual event honors the exceptional achievements of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) alumni who have left an indelible mark on their fields. Set to air on BET on December 1 at 8 p.m. ET, the night promises to be a tribute to trailblazers, bound together by the theme, “Celebrating Black Excellence.”

A Dynamic Host with HBCU Roots

Steering the evening’s festivities is none other than actress and comedian Kym Whitley, an HBCU alumna herself and a proud graduate of Fisk University. With her trademark humor and warmth, Whitley is ready to set the tone for an inspiring night. “Hosting HBCU Honors is truly a privilege,” Whitley shared. “I owe so much to my time at Fisk University. HBCUs gave me the tools to succeed, and it’s an honor to stand on that stage and celebrate the incredible people who are making history today.”

Spotlight on Trailblazing Leaders

Among those being honored this year is Hollywood heavyweight Will Packer, the record-breaking, Emmy-nominated filmmaker and NFL team owner. Packer’s transformative influence on the entertainment industry has created space for Black talent and reshaped narratives in storytelling. Reflecting on this moment, Packer noted, “HBCUs have been the cornerstone of Black success for generations. My time at Florida A&M University shaped who I am as a filmmaker and as a person. Receiving this honor from a platform that celebrates that legacy is incredibly meaningful to me.”

The event will also celebrate Dr. Lonnie Johnson, former NASA engineer and the genius behind the iconic Super Soaker, for his revolutionary work in science and engineering. With a focus on clean energy innovations, Dr. Johnson continues to inspire aspiring Black scientists. Visionary tech leader Jewel Burks Solomon will be recognized for her groundbreaking work at Collab Capital, where she champions funding and opportunities for diverse entrepreneurs.

Performances and Family Moments to Remember

Kicking off the show is a high-energy performance by DC’s beloved Go-Go band, Be’la Dona. The night will showcase a series of musical tributes, with GRAMMY-winning powerhouses Fantasia and Hezekiah Walker taking the stage, alongside “The Voice” star Mac Royals. In a special moment of family pride, Will Packer’s children, Nija and Zion Packer, will join the celebration. Gospel star Erica Campbell and her daughter Krista Campbell, a Spelman College student, will also grace the stage with a heartfelt performance. Hip-hop legend MC Lyte and the Virginia Union University Gospel Choir are set to deliver show-stopping numbers that will keep audiences enthralled.

One of the highlights will be an homage to the Divine Nine by spoken word artist J Ivy, with a poetic tribute paired with soulful vocals from Tarrey Torae, showcasing the legacy and spirit of Black Greek-letter organizations. Rising star Imani-Grace Cooper, named this year’s HBCU Rising Star, will captivate the audience with her performance.

A Testament to Legacy and Commitment

Procter & Gamble’s sponsorship underscores its dedication to amplifying the voices and achievements of the Black community. “Our brands are proud to support initiatives that amplify the impact and importance of HBCUs,” said Eric Austin, Vice President of Marketing and Media Innovation at Procter & Gamble. “Together, we celebrate the achievements of those who inspire and lead the way for future generations.”
