In honor of Megan Thee Stallion, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and some members of the City Council presented a key to the city to the Grammy-winning musician on Sunday (May 1). As reported by ABC13, Turner also declared Monday (May 2) as Megan thee Stallion Day.
“Megan Thee Stallion has an extraordinary entertainment career, but we wanted to honor her for what she does offstage to lift people’s lives in underserved communities,” Turner said in honoring the rapper for her philanthropic pursuits, which include the 2021 launch of the Pete and Thomas Foundation memorializing Meg’s mother and father. “She assisted people after the 2021 winter storm, during the pandemic, and helped those struggling with homelessness. I look forward to watching her grow as an artist and humanitarian.”
In recognition of this special day – which also happens to coincide with Meg’s mother’s and grandmother’s birthdays – Meg surprised three individuals with $5,000 each from her foundation, which focuses on education, housing, and wellness. At the dedication ceremony at which Megan juggled her new hardware, a bouquet of flowers and a black cowboy hat, she said, “I really can’t believe I got my own key to my own city.”
Afterwards, realizing how special it is that her birthday coincides with both her mother’s and grandmother’s, Megan concluded, “Each of these women helped me grow into the woman I am today.”. “I don’t know what kind of person I would be if granny hadn’t raised me with such kindness and generosity.”. Walking by these ladies’ houses, you can see they are giving out money, candy, whatever they have. And I always felt that I wanted to be just like her. I wanted to be nice like them. They made me feel so beautiful and so loved, and they made everyone they met feel the same way. Thus, I thought, “When I grow up I want to be just like them.” Both the rapper’s mother and grandmother passed away in 2019.
On her Instagram account, Megan shared pictures from the event, including pictures of herself posing proudly with Turner, holding up her translucent key to the city and a proclamation stating that today is her special day.
