Before audiences pressed play at home, Doing Life got a different kind of viewing in Atlanta.
On Friday, October 2, actress Jasmine Sargent welcomed guests to Stage Audio Production in Scottdale for an intimate red carpet and screening of Tyler Perry’s latest Netflix drama, bringing together cast, creatives and supporters for a closer look at a story built around what happens when life gives you another shot.
Written, produced and directed by Tyler Perry, Doing Life introduces audiences to two people carrying very different realities: a single mother trying to survive and a formerly incarcerated man whose past could easily overshadow the person he is capable of becoming.
Their paths crossing becomes the foundation for a story that asks a familiar but complicated question: How much of a person should be determined by where they’ve been?

For Sargent, that story is told from another important perspective.
She portrays Lisa, the older sister of Anika, played by Naomi Baker. Lisa isn’t simply standing on the sidelines of her sister’s life. She has opinions, concerns and a protective instinct that immediately adds tension to the choices being made around her.
And that’s what makes the character interesting.
Because sometimes love doesn’t arrive as agreement.
Sometimes it looks like questioning somebody’s decisions. Sometimes it means being suspicious of the person they’re willing to trust. And sometimes protecting the people you love means confronting the possibility that your idea of what is best for them may not be the life they choose for themselves.
Sargent brings that tension to Lisa while adding another dramatic performance to a résumé that already includes appearances in Beauty in Black, House of Payne and G.R.I.T.S.
Friday’s screening gave Atlanta audiences the chance to experience that performance together rather than separately behind their Netflix screens.
The evening began with a red carpet before guests settled in for the film. Sargent was joined by members of Atlanta’s entertainment community, with Nzinga Imani, Danielle LaRoach and Deji LaRay among the talent expected for the night.

After the credits rolled, the experience continued with a conversation surrounding Sargent’s role and the process of bringing the film to life.
That intimate setting made the night different from the typical premiere experience.
There was the carpet. There were cameras. There were familiar faces.
But ultimately, everyone was there for the same thing: the story.
And Doing Life is a story interested in the uncomfortable space between who someone has been and who they are trying to become.
Second chances sound beautiful until you’re the person being asked to give one.
Redemption sounds inspiring until someone’s past walks into your family.
And love can sound simple until it requires you to look beyond everything you thought you knew about somebody.
Those are the spaces where Doing Life finds its tension.
And for one Friday night just outside Atlanta, audiences got to experience those questions together—with one of the actresses helping bring them to the screen sitting right there in the room.
Because sometimes a second chance isn’t about starting over. It’s about finally being seen for who you’re becoming.
Tyler Perry’s Doing Life is now streaming on Netflix.
