Southern Swagger and Sisterhood: Inside the Red Carpet Premiere of G.R.I.T.S. (Girls Raised In The South)

Written by: Nicole Gregory

On Monday, October 27, Brookhaven’s Look Dine-In Cinemas transformed into a hub of glitz, grace, and good Southern energy for the red carpet premiere of G.R.I.T.S. (Girls Raised In The South). The night was nothing short of cinematic — blending Hollywood flair with authentic Southern charm. Cameras flashed as cast members Jasmine Sargent, Ashanti Harris, and Aja “Slimeroni” Canyon made their grand entrances, joined by the show’s creator, Deji LaRay. The energy was electric, the fashion was bold, and the pride was undeniable. It wasn’t just a premiere — it was a homecoming for stories rooted in the heart of the South.

G.R.I.T.S., streaming exclusively on ALLBLK, is the kind of show that reminds viewers why storytelling still matters. It’s heartfelt, funny, and refreshingly real — a love letter to Southern womanhood and the unbreakable bond of friendship. The show follows three Memphis women — Keisha (Jasmine Sargent), Ty (Ashanti Harris), and Francis (Aja “Slimeroni” Canyon) — as they navigate the highs and lows of life, love, and ambition while holding fast to one thing that keeps them grounded: roller skating.

The series doesn’t just shine a light on the vibrant culture of Memphis — it immerses you in it. From the rhythmic bounce of roller rinks to the soul food that warms every table, G.R.I.T.S. captures the heart of a city that knows both struggle and soul. Keisha, Ty, and Francis dream of leaving Memphis for the glitz of Hollywood, but their roots — their faith, their families, and their sisterhood — pull them back to the city that made them. In their world, success isn’t about escaping; it’s about evolving without losing where you come from.

At its core, G.R.I.T.S. is about resilience and reinvention. It’s about women who’ve been counted out, standing tall and skating forward anyway. Each character brings something different to the table — Keisha’s hustle, Ty’s heart, and Francis’ fire — showing that strength in the South doesn’t always come with perfection, but it always comes with purpose.

The premiere night echoed those same themes — Black excellence, community, and celebration. Guests mixed and mingled under warm lights, sharing laughter and love for a project that feels like both a mirror and a milestone. Deji LaRay’s vision for G.R.I.T.S. doesn’t just entertain; it amplifies voices that have too often been left out of the mainstream narrative. This is a story for every woman who’s ever chased her dream with grit and grace, and for every Southern girl who knows that her story is worth telling.

Because in the South, they say when all else fails — you skate until you can’t skate anymore.
