In an industry often defined by formulas and familiar faces, Tel K. Ganesan is rewriting the script—literally and figuratively. The Indian American engineer-turned-filmmaker has transformed a career in corporate America into a crusade for creative truth, and his breakout independent film Trap City proves that storytelling is most powerful when it’s personal.
Now streaming on Apple TV and Prime Video, Trap City isn’t just a movie—it’s a message.
A Story Rooted in Reality
Written and produced by Tel, Trap City confronts themes of ambition, redemption, and the systemic traps that hold underserved communities in place. With an unexpected casting duo—comedian Brandon T. Jackson in a serious role and rapper Jeezy as a street pastor—the film flips expectations and forces audiences to confront uncomfortable truths.

“I saw myself in the story,” Tel shared during an exclusive interview with SNUBB3D Magazine. “Not in the literal sense, but in the barriers we face chasing dreams. Whether it’s in corporate life or creative spaces, the limitations are real—but so is the drive to overcome them.”
From Auto Plants to Movie Sets
Before entering the world of film, Tel built his career as an engineer at Chrysler. But even as he moved into entrepreneurship and creative production, he never left structure behind.
“Engineering taught me discipline and systems,” he explained. “That gave me an edge as a filmmaker. In the creative world, you need process—even if it’s just to let the creativity fly within safe bounds.”
As an independent filmmaker without the backing of a major studio, Tel leaned heavily on the pre-production phase. “Big studios have legacy systems and money. Indies have to win with preparation. We outworked every moment before the cameras even started rolling.”

The Power of Unexpected Casting
Casting Brandon T. Jackson as a street rapper and Jeezy as a preacher wasn’t just bold—it was intentional. Tel believes deeply in casting by alignment, not image. “The human mind is drawn to contrast. That’s what makes people pay attention.”
He recalls a pivotal behind-the-scenes moment with Jeezy, who juggled a campaign event in Atlanta with a crucial ADR session. “There was pressure, but Jeezy showed up. That moment reminded me—this project means something deeper to everyone involved.”
Escaping the Trap Is a Choice
Trap City doesn’t preach—it paints. Through real dilemmas like gun violence, loyalty, and loss, Tel humanizes the very headlines we often scroll past.
“Our goal wasn’t to glorify or condemn,” he said. “We wanted to show people’s real choices. In the end, it’s about asking: can I become trap-free in my own life?”
For Tel, it’s a mindset. And for the audience, it’s an invitation.
For the Dreamers and the Doubters
To creatives stuck in suits or skeptical of pursuing their passion, Tel offers straightforward advice: “Believe in it 100%. Go all in. If it’s not real to you, it won’t feel real to anyone else.”
He encourages storytellers to make their work timely, relatable, and emotionally raw. “Forget about chasing trends. Focus on timeless. Focus on impact.”

A Legacy Worth More Than Applause
Tel isn’t just focused on Trap City’s success—he’s focused on its echo. With a theatrical release set for India and more platforms lining up to carry the film globally, his goal is simple: share the story as widely and honestly as possible.
“I want my legacy to outlive me,” he said. “Not in awards or dollars, but in impact. If people say, ‘That man gave more than he took,’ then I did something right.”

Despite success, Tel stays grounded. “Glamour expires. I still see myself as the guy who came to the U.S. 36 years ago with a dream. I’m just doing the best I can with the time I have.”
