The Special Needs Network (SNN) recently marked a significant milestone with the success of its 16th Annual Pink Pump Affair, held on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at the prestigious Beverly Wilshire Hotel. This year’s event, aptly named the “Sweet Sixteen,” not only celebrated sixteen years of dedicated service to families impacted by autism and developmental disabilities but also highlighted the power of community and collective action.

The Pink Pump Affair, hosted by the renowned journalist Pat Harvey from CBS 2 News, was a resounding success, drawing attention to the critical mission of SNN and the importance of supporting individuals with disabilities. Areva Martin, President, and Founder of Special Needs Network expressed her gratitude, stating, “This year’s Pink Pump Affair was a testament to the power of community and the impact we can have when we come together for a common cause.”

The event served as a platform to raise awareness and crucial funds for SNN’s ongoing advocacy efforts and provision of essential resources to those in need. “The support we received will allow us to continue our mission of providing critical resources and advocating for the rights of individuals with disabilities,” added Martin, emphasizing the significance of community support in driving positive change.

Amidst the celebrations, the past year has brought to light the urgent need for increased support and advocacy, magnified by recent tragic events, such as the loss of young Ryan Gainer. These incidents sparked essential conversations about the intersection of disability and societal systems, culminating in a pivotal Town Hall discussion and policy briefing in Washington, D.C. These discussions reinforced the necessity of SNN’s mission and the impactful services it provides to the community.

The Pink Pump Affair not only celebrated past achievements but also served as a catalyst for future endeavors, highlighting the continuous commitment of SNN to advocate for the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities. As the organization looks ahead, the resounding success of this year’s event serves as a testament to the unwavering dedication of SNN’s supporters and the profound impact of their collective efforts in creating a more inclusive and supportive society.

Honoring Excellence and Advocacy

The event honored four exceptional individuals whose work and advocacy have made a significant impact on the lives of people with disabilities:

  • Trailblazer Award: Tamera Mowry-Housley, an Emmy Award-winning host, author, actress, producer, and entrepreneur, celebrated for her inspiring career and advocacy efforts.
  • Game Changer Award: Alva Adams-Mason, Group Manager, Multicultural Business Alliance & Dealer Relations, Toyota Motor North America, recognized for her exemplary leadership in promoting diversity and inclusion.
  • Self-Advocate Award: Cristy Romero, is a dedicated SNN participant and an inspiring advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Areva Martin Everyday Advocate Award: Michael Jett, entrepreneur, and autism self-advocate, was honored for his tireless efforts to increase supplier diversity at Kroger and his advocacy in the autism community.
