A Weekend of Inspiration: The 2024 Black Girls Dream Conference

Atlanta recently buzzed with energy as the Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium hosted the 2024 Black Girls Dream Conference! From June 7-8, 2024, the Atlanta Marriott Marquis transformed into a vibrant haven of empowerment, filled with over 1,300 attendees ready to immerse themselves in love, learning, and sisterhood.

Exploring Afrofuturism

This year’s conference theme, “Afrofuturism: Intelligence, Innovation, Investment,” set the stage for exploring the expansive possibilities of the Black experience. The weekend was packed with dynamic workshops and inspiring speakers addressing everything from mental wellness and social justice to financial literacy and beauty. It was a celebration of who Black girls and women are and a dive into what they can become.

Intelligence: Global Insights

Powered by the Gates Foundation, the “Black Women of the Global South” panel featured a powerful delegation of women from across the African diaspora. From Aline Odara of Brazil to Barbara A. Perkins of the U.S. & Bahamas, these leaders shared their invaluable insights and challenges, fostering a rich dialogue about issues facing communities of color around the globe.

Innovation: Tech Meets Creativity

Microsoft’s “Tech Salon” brought the future to the present with hands-on experiences in S.T.E.A.M. The space was buzzing with live demonstrations on A.I., coding, robotics, and more, inspiring attendees of all ages to imagine and create the technological advancements of tomorrow.

Investment: Building Radical Futures

The return of the “We Got Now!” panel, now focusing on S.T.E.A.M., showcased the next-generation innovators. With voices like Laila Pruitt from Starz’s BMF and Naya Ellis of Wingltt, this session highlighted the power of young Black women leading the charge in various fields and shaping our future.

A Legacy Reaffirmed

One of the most moving moments of the conference was the “Moving the Legacy Forward” fireside chat with Dr. Bernice King. Her heartfelt discussion on carrying forward the legacy of her parents, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, left the audience inspired and reflective.
